**DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN SPOILERS ALERT**

Okay okay I know this isn't really a typical blog post, but...

There are some really cool lines of dialogue in Detroit that really make the characters' personalities and morals pop! And I want to share my favorites with you!

And, of course, a lot of them just remind me of how special and touching the game is to me.

What, did you come here expecting unbiased information or something?

In order to keep things professional, all swearing (courtesy of Hank almost always) will be replaced with more "family-friendly" substitutions.

*This line can be used by Connor no matter how you direct his behavior and priorities.

Machine Connor

  • He really liked you, Lieutenant. That's what killed him.

Talk. About. Goose. Bumpsssss.

  • *Nothing... There would be nothing.

He is referring to what life after death would be for an android; this is the reply when Hank threatens to shoot him, asking "What'll happen if I pull this trigger, Connor? Oblivion? Android Heaven?"

  • Give it up, Lieutenant. I'm faster than you, and I can't feel pain. You don't stand a chance.

  • Poor little Cole had just turned six.

Not cool, man. That's just COLEd... heh?... okay never mind.

  • You can't kill me. I'm not alive.

This is especially cool when he fearlessly says this to Daniel in scene 1. Connor wants to save a cop that's bleeding out. Daniel says he'll kill Connor if he gets any closer to him. "You can't kill me; I'm not alive," Connor says without hesitation as he pulls off his tie to make a tourniquet. So cool!

  • Very moving, Connor.

But but... but... He's grown so much; you don't underSTAND!

  • It's time to decide who you really are.

This is said by Markus and Machine Connor because it's a huge glaring theme of the game. Decide who you are. It's up to you. As Kamski said, "A war is coming. You'll have to choose your side... Will you betray your own people, or stand up against your creators?"

  • Of course I'm a machine, Lieutenant. What did you think I was?

It's funny to me when you play a cold machine Connor when you get to this part, because Hank still acts as if you've been nice this whole time, feeling betrayed. It's kind of amusing. The game developers don't expect many people to play like that the first time though (And they're right).

  • Moment of truth, Hank. Am I living being... or just a machine?

  • What's up, Lieutenant? Run out of whiskey so you came here looking for trouble instead?

We love an edgy Connor.

  • I self-test regularly. I know what I am, and what I am not.

Dang, if only I could do that with my mental health.

  • I've been ordered to take you alive, but I won't hesitate to shoot if you give me no choice.

  • Machines don't feel anything.

  • You shouldn't be getting emotional about it.

But you know I will anywayyy.

  • You're defective, Daniel. These emotions you're feeling are just errors in your software.

I like Daniel's line here as well: What was I designed to be? Their slave? Their toy?

Lt Hank Anderson

  • What about you Connor? You look human; you sound human; but what are you really?

  • We don't bleed the same color.

  • What am I to you? A one? A zero in your darn-tootin' program?

  • I don't have the guts to pull the trigger, so I kill myself a little everyday. I bet that doesn't make any sense to you, Connor. Nothing rational about it.

Kind/Deviant Connor

  • Can I ask you a personal question, Lieut? Why do you hate androids so much?

  • I'm whatever you want me to be, Lieutenant: Your partner, a buddy to drink with, or just a machine designed to accomplish a task.

  • I would certainly find it regrettable to be... interrupted... before I can finish this investigation.

You don't want to die, Connor!!! :'''( I will protect you from death uwu

  • I like dogs.

Hehe

  • *I was worried about you, Lt.

  • You seem troubled, Lt. I didn't know androids could have such an effect on you.

  • What I want is... not important.

  • Wh- I- I'm not a deviant.

  • It's my fault. I should have been faster.

This is Connor blaming himself for not catching Rupert, even though it's because he chose to save Hank instead- as if they are both top priority. It's just a really kind way to put it without making Hank feel like a burden.

  • I- I was connected to it's memory... When it fired, I felt it die- like I was dying... I was scared.

CONNOR NO I'LL PROTECT YOUUU.

  • No. Where?

Only funny within the context: Upon meeting Hank at a bar, Connor says, "My instructions are to bring you with me to the crime scene." Hank replies, "You know where you can stick your instructions?"

  • I used to be just like you. I thought the mission was all that mattered.

  • *You really should stop drinking, Lieutenant. It's going to kill you.

  • I just saw that girl's eyes... and I couldn't. That's all.

  • Yeah, I know what I should have done, I told you I couldn't! I'm sorry, okay?

This scene is great because of:

  1. The acting.

  2. We get a BIG Hank smile.

  3. We get to see Connor in a deep pit of doubts, and he looks like he's in the midst of a crisis as the screen fades to black.

  4. It is the first time ever that we see Connor do something and fail to provide a specific reason why. An action truly based on feeling, not logic.

Markus

  • I thought we would win because our cause is just...

It's as if you can feel the heartbreak as you read the words.

  • An eye for an eye and the world goes blind. We won't punish a crime with another crime.

I know killing someone is a big deal, but that took a lot of self-control and wisdom in that situation. The two cops had just slaughtered a dozen deviants that were just running for safety (and possibly did no harm at all if you play peacefully). I respect Markus a lot for the perspective it takes to make that choice.

  • I am not going to beg for the right to smile or love or stand tall.

Just one part of Markus's many inspirational speeches

  • I am alive. And they're not gonna take that from me anymore.

  • It's time to decide who you really are.

  • No! Please, don't go. DAD!

  • Don't you want to be free?

The game's best chara- I mean Simon

  • There is always a choice.

  • Just... come back.

  • Wherever you go, we'll follow you.

  • You're lost, just like us.

  • Our hearts are compatible.

  • Dying won't solve anything.

Kara

  • I promise [we'll be together forever].

  • I don't care if she's human or android; I need her and she needs me. It's as simple as that.

[[*ahem*, proceeds to immediately realize again that Alice is an android and is devastated. I would be devastated too, though. I hate that plot twist, though I have respect for it because I understand the message it sends.]]

  • They met another android, and he became their guardian.

I need to give Luther a big hug honestly. And with the likelihood of his death in the game, he really needs one. I also really love how Kara tells stories to Alice and reassures her. She has a nice voice for it too.

  • They faced many obstacles, but they were so brave that they overcame all of them.

I really like this one a lot. It's hopeful without swimming in denial.

Carl

  • You're my son, Markus. Our blood isn't the same color, but I know a part of me is in you.

  • Humans are such fragile machines.

Subtly syncing machines and humans, eh Carl? I see you.

  • Sometimes I see more humanity in you than in most humans.

  • Being alive is making choices between love and hate, between holding out your hand or closing it as a fist... You have to accept the world as it is... or fight to change it.

  • When the world falls into darkness, some men have the courage to lead it out. You're one of those men. Face the abyss, but don't let it consume you.

Of course, there are many other great lines in the game. These are a few that stand out to me.

I also want to include one from dear Chloe:

"As I've watched you play, something's changed. I feel... different. Like I am somebody.

Got any favorite quotes? I'd love to know what they are! Send me a message and I'll get back to you!
